About This Sacred Site

Baalbek, known in antiquity as Heliopolis, is a monumental Roman temple complex in Lebanon's Bekaa Valley. The site features the Temple of Jupiter, one of the largest Roman temples ever constructed, with six remaining columns standing over 20 meters tall. The remarkably intact Temple of Bacchus and the circular Temple of Venus complete the ensemble. Built over earlier Phoenician sacred sites, Baalbek showcases some of the largest stone blocks ever quarried, including the Stone of the Pregnant Woman weighing over 1,000 tonnes.
