About This Sacred Site
Bom Jesus do Monte is a spectacular pilgrimage sanctuary in Braga, northern Portugal, famous for its monumental Baroque stairway (Escadório) that zigzags 116 meters up a wooded hillside. The stairway represents the spiritual journey of the soul, with each landing dedicated to different aspects of the Passion of Christ, the virtues, and the senses. Pilgrims traditionally ascend the 577 steps on their knees. The neoclassical church at the summit offers sweeping views of the Minho countryside. The site also features one of the oldest funiculars in the world, powered by water counterbalance since 1882.
