About This Sacred Site
Borobudur in Central Java is the world's largest Buddhist temple and one of the greatest Buddhist monuments ever created. Built in the 9th century during the Sailendra dynasty, this massive structure consists of nine stacked platforms (six square and three circular) topped by a central dome, decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. The monument represents the Buddhist cosmological journey from the world of desire through the world of forms to formlessness.
