🏛️ Chellah Necropolis (Rabat)
Morocco
About This Sacred Site
The Chellah in Rabat is a hauntingly atmospheric site where a medieval Islamic necropolis was built atop the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Sala Colonia. The Merinid sultans of the 13th and 14th centuries constructed elaborate tombs, a mosque, and a zaouia among the Roman ruins, creating a layered landscape of civilization spanning over 2,000 years. Today, storks nest atop the crumbling minaret, fig trees push through Roman columns, and cats roam among Merinid tombs — the whole site has an air of romantic decay. The sacred pool, fed by a natural spring, is still visited by women seeking fertility blessings. A sacred eel is said to inhabit the waters, and visitors throw eggs and coins to it as offerings.
