🏛️ Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba
Spain
About This Sacred Site
The Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba in Spain is one of the most extraordinary religious buildings in the world — a medieval Islamic mosque with a Renaissance Christian cathedral built inside it. Originally a Visigothic church, it was converted to a mosque in 784 CE and expanded into one of the largest mosques in the world. After the Reconquista in 1236, a cathedral was inserted into its center. The forest of over 850 columns with their distinctive red-and-white arches creates a mesmerizing effect.
