About This Sacred Site
Petra, the ancient Nabataean capital carved into rose-red sandstone cliffs in southern Jordan, was a major center of worship and trade. The city features elaborate rock-cut architecture including the iconic Treasury (Al-Khazneh), temples, and a monastery. The Nabataeans worshipped deities including Dushara and Al-Uzza at this site. Rediscovered by Western explorers in 1812, Petra was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and remains Jordan's most visited attraction.
