✝️ Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco
Mexico
About This Sacred Site
The Sanctuary of Atotonilco, located near San Miguel de Allende in Guanajuato, is often called the 'Sistine Chapel of Mexico' for its extraordinary interior covered in vibrant murals and decorations. Built in 1740 by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro, every inch of the interior is covered with paintings depicting the Passion of Christ and the stations of the cross. It played a pivotal role in Mexican history when Father Hidalgo stopped here in 1810 to take the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which became the symbol of Mexico's independence movement. The sanctuary remains an active pilgrimage center where penitents practice spiritual exercises.
