The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sameiro is situated on a hilltop near Braga and is the second-most important Marian sanctuary in Portugal after Fátima. Dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, the site was established in 1863 by Father Martinho António Pereira da Silva. The neoclassical basilica contains the largest collection of silver tableware used in divine worship in Portugal. From its hilltop location at 572 meters elevation, it offers panoramic views that stretch to the coast on clear days. The annual pilgrimage on the first Sunday of June draws tens of thousands of devotees.
