About This Sacred Site

Abydos was the most important cult center of Osiris, the Egyptian god of the afterlife and resurrection, and one of the most sacred sites in all of ancient Egypt. Egyptians believed the entrance to the underworld was located here, and every Egyptian hoped to make a pilgrimage to Abydos at least once or to have a memorial chapel built on their behalf. The Temple of Seti I, the best-preserved temple at the site, contains the famous Abydos King List — a chronological list of 76 pharaohs carved into the limestone walls. The temple's reliefs are considered among the finest in all of Egyptian art, with remarkably preserved colors.
