About This Sacred Site

The Sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidaurus was the most celebrated healing center of the ancient Greek and Roman world. Dedicated to Asklepios, the god of medicine, it attracted the sick from across the Mediterranean who came seeking divine cures. Patients slept in the abaton (dormitory) hoping for a healing vision from the god in their dreams, a practice called incubation. The sanctuary's theater, built around 340 BCE, is renowned for its perfect acoustics — a coin dropped at center stage can be heard in the last of its 14,000 seats.
