Mount Athos in northeastern Greece is an autonomous monastic state and the spiritual center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Home to 20 monasteries and approximately 2,000 monks, it has been continuously inhabited by monastic communities since at least 963 CE. Women and female animals have been banned from the peninsula since an imperial edict in 1046.
