About This Sacred Site

The Karnak Temple Complex in Luxor is the largest ancient religious site in the world, covering over 200 acres. Built and expanded by over 30 pharaohs across 2,000 years, the complex was the most important place of worship in ancient Egypt, dedicated primarily to the god Amun-Ra. The Great Hypostyle Hall alone contains 134 massive columns, each 10 meters in circumference and 24 meters tall, arranged in 16 rows. The sacred lake, avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, and numerous temples create an overwhelming sense of ancient devotion. Sound and light shows now illuminate the ruins at night, evoking the grandeur of pharaonic Egypt.
