πͺ¨ Kyaiktiyo Pagoda (Golden Rock)
Myanmar
About This Sacred Site
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, known as the Golden Rock, is one of Myanmar's most extraordinary pilgrimage sites. A 7.6-meter-tall pagoda sits atop a gold-leafed boulder that appears to defy gravity, balanced on the very edge of a cliff at an elevation of 1,100 meters. Buddhist legend holds that the boulder is kept in place by a single strand of the Buddha's hair enshrined within the pagoda. Male pilgrims apply gold leaf to the rock as an act of devotion, while women are not permitted to touch it. The sight of the golden boulder seemingly hovering at the cliff's edge, especially at sunset, is one of Myanmar's most awe-inspiring spectacles.
