About This Sacred Site
Noravank (New Monastery) is a 13th-century Armenian Apostolic Church monastery set dramatically in a narrow gorge with red-orange cliff walls in southern Armenia. The complex includes the Church of St. Karapet, the Church of the Holy Mother of God (Surb Astvatsatsin), and a mausoleum. The two-story Surb Astvatsatsin church, with its narrow cantilevered stairs and intricate stone carvings by the master sculptor Momik, is considered one of the finest examples of medieval Armenian architecture.
