About This Sacred Site
Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a massive sandstone monolith in the heart of Australia's Red Centre. Sacred to the Anangu Aboriginal people for tens of thousands of years, it is central to their Tjukurpa (creation stories) — the Dreaming. The rock's caves contain ancient paintings, and different features of Uluru correspond to different ancestral beings. Climbing Uluru was banned in 2019 out of respect for its sacred significance to the traditional owners.
