Nakhal Fort is a dramatic pre-Islamic fortification dramatically situated at the edge of the Al Hajar Mountains, built on a natural rock foundation. The fort contains a mosque and prayer rooms that have served the local community for centuries. Originally dating to pre-Islamic times, the fort was extensively expanded during the Ya'ariba dynasty in the 17th century. Surrounded by date palm oases and hot springs, Nakhal Fort is one of the most picturesque and best-restored forts in Oman.
