β¨ Sule Pagoda
Myanmar
About This Sacred Site
Sule Pagoda stands at the geographic heart of Yangon's downtown, a 48-meter-tall golden stupa that has served as a civic and spiritual landmark for over 2,000 years. According to legend, it enshrines a hair of the Buddha brought to Myanmar by two merchant brothers. The pagoda is notable for its octagonal shape, which extends from base to crown β a unique feature among Myanmar's pagodas. During colonial times, the British used it as the center point for laying out the city's grid. In modern times, the pagoda has been a focal point for political demonstrations, including the 1988 and 2007 uprisings.
